Why life?

This is a story about the cosmos, about a great burst of energy in which space and time are suddenly born. From that moment, matter arises from a single point, and starts to mix, interact, join, divide… In the middle of this chaos, certain order appears. Planets enter into an orbit, stars begin to burn in a smooth but violent way. The main interaction between matter is in the form of collisions, where energy is exchanged. Existing planets get destroyed, shattered. Other elements of space find in their meeting an opportunity to join, forming new planets or stars and leaving behind parts of the progenitors.

In this process of destruction and creation, in some planets chemicals are reacting in a million different reactions. Molecules split due to impact with other molecules or by their own instability. Other molecules merge to form new compounds. This is a beautiful dance of particles governed by a random and chaotic rulebook. But somehow, in some place, a miracle occurs when a fairly stable type of molecule gets into a liquid state. Not too packed to prevent other molecules to move. Not too loose to allows excessive freedom. It is just the perfect amount of density and a slightly polar property, which other molecules find optimal for a gentle exchange of information. Reactions are smooth and more ordered, and thus complex interactions start to take place, where patterns repeat so often that two special kinds of rules govern this landscape: positive feedback and negative feedback.

This is the story of two types of forces. This is the story of polarity and interrelation. This is the story of the Ying and the Yang.

This is the story of life: a perfect balance between molecules exchanging information in loops.
